If I end up moving to BC, the Cutlass must pass inspection. I hear that they’re really uptight about inspections over there. So here’s my backup plan if the Cutlass doesn’t pass. If it’s not road legal in BC due to frame work/excessive bondo/general hooptieness, I'm planning on picking up an Astro/Safari to drive while I source a shell. Do you guys see anything wrong with this plan?

Yes, the fact that you’re moving to Canada.

I hear someone one here used to have one...not sure if he’d recommend it or not.

Apart from absolutely horrid crash test ratings, they can be pretty groovy.

Hey, I think one of the AssSafari twins would be pretty awesome.

Already in Canada, man. I just might be moving from the fustercluck that is Ontario to the beautiful city of Kelowna.

I would but early northstars suck, and my budget doesn't stretch to an 01+

This is a valid point. What is a pallbearer limo other than a really pimpin’ lowslung van with a trunk?

Not enough money to own a decent ‘llac, too proud to be in a post-79 Lincoln.

Because, if the Cutlass is practically irreparable, I need a car. The AssSafari twins are easy to see out of, spacious, cheap, and reliable. Besides, I won't get rid of the cutlass- I'll just hole it up in the garage until I can find a shell.

Why should I talk you out of it? If you’re looking for an almost-mid-engined AWD V8 minivan, do you have another compelling alternative?

Hey man Ontario is a wonderful place! Just because we have bad roads, high sales tax and a fucked up provincial government system doesn't mean anything. We're still better than all the ther provinces.

Throw in some shag carpeting, pull the middle row, add LEDs and panelling to the interior, and top it off with some nice pinstripes. It still has more aftermarket than a 1984 cutlass sedan.

Yeah there is. Hell in the ‘90s it was a HUGE hit with JDM customisers and was the most imported american car in Japan. (I am being serious) if its a 4.3 v6 one most SBC parts interchange minus heads and intake manifold.

Yeah, but nobody customizes those things nowadays. I’ve seen ONE custom Astro with an Escalade front clip. Otherwise, nothing.

You could get the heads studded by northstar performance, and that helps quite a bit.

As someone who lives in BC...I think part of the purpose of the provincial inspection is to not let in rusty cars from “back east” as all the old people say. Unless everything is as it should be when it left the factory, it’ll fail. Or you’ll have to find someone who takes cash to pass it....most people I know who are moving into BC with not a new car just pick something up super cheap that they run till the insurance is out and then buy a car here. My buddy rocked a 94 Taurus from Alberta with Alberta plates with almost 400k on it that he bought for $500 to drive to Vancouver in, then just junked it when the insurance ran out

Well...I loved these vans, especially the AWD versions, until I learned just how terribad they are in a crash, especially a frontal one. Here’s the overlap test for a 1996 Astro. A bit unfair, since all vans do poorly at this, but this is pretty bad. Frontal impact isn’t much better.

My Cutlass has no airbags, and is filled with rust, so I'd say it's a draw.
